Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

What is an abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, or "tummy tuck," is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles and skin of the abdominal wall.

Who is a candidate for a "tummy tuck"?

Men or women who are in relatively good shape but are unhappy with their abdominal appearance that doesn't respond to diet and exercise are good candidates for plastic surgery of the abdomen. A protruding abdomen (due to weakened muscles) or loose, sagging skin may be corrected with an abdominoplasty.

Where will my scars be located?

Abdominoplasty scars generally are designed to be hidden under underwear or bathing suits, with an incision made around the navel also to correct loose skin and muscle above it.

What type of anesthesia is used?

General anesthesia is used for patient comfort.

How long does a "tummy tuck" take?

Usually the abdominoplasty will take approximately two to three hours.

Will I be wearing a garment after my abdominoplasty procedure?

Yes, we will place you in an abdominal binder, or bathing suit/girdle type garment (which will be more comfortable to wear and easier to conceal under clothing). You will most likely wear it for the first six weeks. You may remove the garment to shower.

When will I be back to normal?

Most people return to work after two weeks. You will need six weeks before resuming exercise and strenuous activities.
